After struggling to find Taiwanese-style shaved snow in San Francisco, longtime friends Mimi Hanley and David Chung decided to do something about it. So in 2016, the pair quit their tech jobs to open up Powder Shaved Snow.
Located in San Francisco’s lower Haight neighborhood, Powder serves up Taiwanese-inspired shaved snow, a dreamy mixture of shaved ice and ice cream. Prior to opening their business, both Hanley and Chung spent years learning the art of shaved snow to successfully introduce the concept in the Bay Area.
The practice was well worth it as Hanley told Uber Eats, “There’s no better feeling than watching someone try shaved snow for the first time. It’s such a unique experience.”
Powder’s global approach to flavors only add to the experience, featuring favorites such as Vietnamese coffee, horchata, and black sesame. To make these sweet recipes, the shop uses only Taiwanese-made equipment and source their ingredients locally.
“We blend the recipe, freeze the blocks for ten hours, and then we shave it fresh to order,” Hanley said. Once shaved, you can finish the job by adding delicious toppings like chocolate glaze and toasted coconut for a sweet crunch.
With an endless combination of tasty flavors and toppings, it's no surprise Powder has become a Bay Area favorite. Just ask their Snowmies (snow homies), one spoonful of shaved snow and you'll be hooked for life.
