Whether it’s giving up caffeine or cutting out carbs, all too often New Year’s resolutions are about depriving ourselves. This year, why not put a positive spin on your resolutions by adding new things to your life rather than giving something up? Bonus: You’re more likely to keep those resolutions if you enjoy putting them into action. Here are five ways to live a little better in 2019.
1. Be adventurous
Pumping up the adventure in your life doesn’t have to be as extreme as skydiving or hiking Everest—it can be as simple as trying a new class at the gym, taking up a new hobby, or being more adventurous with your food choices. Isn’t it about time you tried goat or organ meats? To expand your horizons in a non-meaty fashion try some harder to find vegetables and fruits, like sea beans or durian. Or spice things up with—well—spices by trying a new-to-you blend, such as za’atar, ras el hanout, dukkah, or berbere, to name just a few. And there’s got to be at least one cuisine in the world you haven’t tried, right? Well go ahead and make it happen in 2019.
2. New Year, new order
We all have our go-to meals, but with the turn of the new year, give yourself a chance to try something new from your go-to restaurant. Instead of your standard “Number 5 with extra sauce,” take a look at the rest of the menu and try something new. You might even discover a new soon-to-be standby or at least way to occasionally mix things up. Feeling risk averse? Start with a simple swap, like a burrito for a bowl or sushi for sashimi.
3. Add, don’t subtract
Instead of cutting something from your diet or life, why not resolve to add something? It could be adding an extra serving of fruits and vegetables or eating at least one brain food, such as a serving of omega 3-rich salmon or a handful of nuts, per day. Does it help to know that at least one study has linked cocoa consumption to improved brain health?
4. Share more meals with loved ones
The holidays shouldn’t be the only time that you catch up with family and friends. Before any post-holiday doldrums have a chance to take hold, get the gang together for an impromptu pizza night, a night of Thai food in front of the TV, or a game night with classic finger foods.
5. Be the best version of yourself
If you are starting the year with a resolution to eat healthier, good for you—there are plenty of fantastic options that prove that healthy food can also be incredibly delicious. A grain bowl (or grain-free cauliflower rice bowl if that’s more your thing) with superfoods like sweet potatoes, kale, healthy fats from avocados, lean protein like fish or turkey, heart-healthy nuts, and a generous glug of olive or nut oil hits the spot and is great for you. But the main thing is to be the best version of yourself and to feel good about that. If you love burritos and pizza, then go for it—2019 is about being yourself.
